Jim McDonald, D.V.M. - Chief of Medicine
Dr. Jim McDonald
grew up in upstate New York and Reston Virginia. He holds a Bachelor's degree from the University of Georgia and received his Veterinary degree from Virginia Tech. His specialty interests include dermatology, orthopedic surgery, and geriatric medicine.
Dr. McDonald and his wife, Liz, have five children: Ryan, Megan, Devin, Brittany and T.J. They also have two Golden Retrievers: Paris and Cayman. Outside of the office, he enjoys traveling, golf, tennis, reading and spending time with the family.
Angela Bakanas, D.V.M
Dr. Angela Bakanas
grew up in Chicago Illinois and received her Veterinary degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She joined our practice in 2003. Her specialty interests include soft tissue surgery and pathology.
Dr. Bakanas and her husband, Brian, have a daughter named Claudia. They also have three dogs, four cats, two horses and a turtle. Dr. Bakanas enjoys horseback riding, reading, and baking.
Lisa Osier-Rodrigo, D.V.M.
Dr. Lisa Osier-Rodrigo
joined Woodbridge Animal Hospital in 2005. Originally from Syracuse, NY, she moved to Northern Virginia after graduating from Cornell University Veterinary School in 2004.
Dr. Osier-Rodrigo spends most of her free time with her husband, daughter and furry family members Denver the dog and Fossey the cat. She also enjoys exercising, reading and watching sports, especially NY Giants football!
Cheryl Phillips, D.V.M.
Dr. Cheryl Phillips
was a member of a military family and grew up travelling around the United States. She received her Bachelor's degree from West Virginia University and her Veterinary degree from the University of Georgia. She joined our practice in 2005. Her specialty interests include internal medicine and soft tissue surgery.
Dr. Phillips and her husband, Shawn, have three children - Savannah, Colton, and Taylor. Their pets include: Panther (a Standard Poodle), Bella (a Pomeranian), Ajax (a Boxer), and two cats: Shelby and Clark. Outside of the office, she enjoys running/adventure races, horseback riding, and taking part in activities with her family.
Tonya Shackelford, D.V.M.
Dr. Tonya Shackelford
was a member of a military family and grew up traveling around the United States. She received both her Bachelor's degree and Veterinary degree from Virginia Tech. She joined our practice in 2005. Her specialty interests include ultrasound, ophthalmology, and dermatology.
Dr. Shackelford and her husband Lee have two children. Outside of the office, she enjoys biking, hiking, and spending time with her kids.
Katrina Salter, D.V.M.
Dr. Katrina Salter
grew up in Waukesha, WI. She received her undergraduate degree in biology from The Johns Hopkins University, her Master's degree in science education from The Citadel, and her Veterinary degree from The University of Wisconsin-Madison. She completed a small animal emergency and rotating internship at VCA SouthPaws Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center in Fairfax, VA before joining our practice as an emergency veterinarian in 2009. Her specialty interests include emergency and critical care, as well as internal medicine.
Dr. Salter shares her home with Maggie and Diesel (Saint Bernards), Badger (Lab/Pomeranian mix), and Eddie (an African Grey parrot). Outside of the office she enjoys travelling and cooking.
Mariea Ross-Estrada, D.V.M.
Dr. Mariea Ross-Estrada
grew up in Southfield, Michigan. She attended Ohio Wesleyan University and received her Veterinary degree from Cornell University. She joined our practice in 2009. Her specialty interests include the human-animal bond, internal medicine and small mammals.
Dr. Ross-Estrada met her husband, Daniel in college. They have two pets: "Apollo" (red eared slider) and "Frijoles Negros" (Chihuahua/Jack Russell/Dachshund). Outside of the office, she enjoys cooking, hiking, and exploring Washington D.C. and Northern Virginia.
Alicia Boyce, D.V.M.
Dr. Alicia Boyce
grew up in Mobile, Alabama. She received her Bachelor's degree and Veterinary degree from Auburn University in 1994.
Dr. Boyce joined our practice in 2004, but left to work in the Northwest in 2008 due to her husband's military transfer. Happily, she returned to Woodbridge in 2012. Her specialty interests include emergency and critical care medicine, soft tissue surgery and feline medicine.
Dr. Boyce and her husband, John, have two children – Lillian & Virginia. Their pets include their adorable pug, Pudge, and three cats. When not at work, Dr. Boyce enjoys spending time with her family and traveling.
M. Idina O’Brien, V.M.D.
Dr. M. Idina O’Brien
grew up in New York and moved to the DC region for an internship in small animal medicine and surgery. She received her Veterinary degree from the University of Pennsylvania. She joined our practice in 2014. Her specialty interests include emergency and critical care medicine.
Dr. O’Brien says that, as an emergency clinician at Woodbridge Animal Hospital, it is humbling to see the determination that pets and their families have to overcome serious illness or injury and says it’s an honor to play a part in the recovery process. She has two pets: Reese (a perfectly behaved ShihTzu) and Sally (a frequently naughty mixed breed). Outside the office, she enjoys tennis, golf, theater and watching the Yankees and to their impressive collection of World Series trophies.
Maggie Derakhshan, D.V.M.
Dr. Maggie Derakhshan
recently moved back to the Northern Virginia area. She grew up in Chantilly, VA and then moved to Florida in 2003 with her family. She received both her Bachelor's degree and Veterinary degree from University of Florida. Dr. Derakhshan completed a small animal emergency and rotating internship at VCA Newark Animal Hospital in Newark, Delaware before joining our practice as an emergency veterinarian in 2015. Her specialty interests include internal medicine and emergency/critical care.
Dr. Derakhshan feels privileged to witness the human-animal bond and to help people and their pets in their times of greatest need. She shares her home with a three-legged Chihuahua named Bitty and her two handsome cats, Moose and Weanie. Outside of veterinary medicine, Dr. Derakhshan enjoys spending time with family and friends, hiking/biking on trails, traveling, and being near the water.
Geoff Tucker, D.V.M.
Dr. Geoff Tucker
is a North Stafford High School graduate and received his B.S. in biology from The College of Charleston, South Carolina. He received his DVM degree from Oklahoma State University. After vet school he participated in a one year rotating internship at SouthPaws Veterinary Referral and emergency center. His special interest include diagnostic imaging, dermatology, emergency medicine.
When not working at the hospital Dr. Tucker enjoys spending time with his wife and children, gardening and rooting for the Redskins, Nationals and the Capitals.
Genevieve Henderson, Hospital Manager
grew up in Bedford, Massachusetts and attended the University of Massachusetts-Boston. She joined our practice in 2006. Her background is in customer service and business ownership.
Genevieve and her husband have three grown sons and a poodle mix named Bentley. She enjoys gardening, reading, antiquing, and remodeling.
Renee Wells, Executive Assistant to Dr. McDonald
grew up in Yorktown, Virginia before moving to Northern Virginia where she attended NVCC, George Mason University and Virginia Tech. Renee joined the staff in 1984. She has held positions of Kennel Attendant, Vet Assistant, Pharmacy/Lab Assistant, Receptionist, Surgical Assistant and Patient Care Supervisor. She currently divides her time between inventory management and client relations.
In Renee's free time, she enjoys photography, gardening, traveling and taking care of her many pets (two dogs, five cats and a backyard full of birds, squirrels, chipmunks, cottontails and raccoons), as well as exploring the world with her fiancé.
Marla Akau, L.V.T. - Head Technician
grew up in Woodbridge, Virginia. She received her Associate's degree in Veterinary Technology from Northern Virginia Community College. She joined our practice in 2005. Her specialty interests include internal medicine and emergency medicine.
Marla and her husband, Brian, have two children - Jacob and Abigail. They also have Lollipop and Patsy Kline (both Boston Terriers) Benji (a poodle mix) and one cat named Sugar Magnolia. When not at the office, she enjoys reading, nature walks/hiking, gardening, and spending time with Brian and the kids.
Brian Akau - Head Technician
grew up in Mobile, AL. He moved to Northern Virginia in 1991. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Biology from VCU. He joined the WAH team in 2003. His special interests include emergency and critical care medicine.
Brian lives with his wife Marla, their two children, Jacob and Abigail, 2 dogs, Lollipop and Patsy Kline, 2 cats, Sugar Magnolia and Claudius Decimus Meridius. While not at WAH he enjoys golfing and spending time with his family.
Erin Hannah, L.V.T. - Licensed Technician
grew up in Harrisonburg, VA. She received her bachelor's degree in psychology at Mary Washington College in 2001, then her associates degree in Veterinary Technology from Cedar Valley College in 2006. She joined our practice in 2010. Her special interests include emergency medicine and dentistry.
Erin has two children - Hannah & Dayton. Erin, Hannah and Dayton are the "forever family" for a hound mix named Lou. When not in the office Erin likes to read, have dinner with friends, and go to the park with her little ones.
Libby Jordan, L.V.T. - Licensed Technician
grew up in Woodbridge, Virginia. She has been part of the team since 2001. She received her Associate's Degree in Veterinary Technology from Northern Virginia Community College in 2005. She is especially interested in emergency medicine and neonatal care.
Libby has three children, and multiple animals (4 dogs, 2 cats, a bird, and a few reptiles) that take up much of her free time, but she also enjoys cake decorating and running.
Lisa Svoboda, L.V.T. – Licensed Technician
grew up on Long Island, NY. She graduated Allegheny College with a B.S. and graduated Suffolk CC College with a B.A. in Animal Science. She worked as an L.V.T. for several years in NY before moving to VA in 2005. She joined our practice in 2005 as an emergency technician.
Lisa enjoys traveling (anywhere) and spending time with friends and family, routing for, yelling at, and crying with the NY Giants and the NY Yankees. Currently, she is still being trained by her 14 year old 'Heinz 57', Nina.
Raneir Hart, L.V.T./C.V.T. - Licensed Technician
received her Associate's degree in Veterinary Technology from Virginia Community College. She is a Licensed Veterinary Technician in the state of Virginia and a Certified Veterinary Technician in the state of Florida. She joined our practice in 2004.
Raneir has two cats, Amelia Airehart and Blossom. When not working in the hospital, she enjoys the outdoors, specifically horseback riding, hiking and sailing.
Jenna Hagar, L.V.T./V.T.S. (ECC) - Licensed Technician
Jenna Hagar is a Veterinary Technician Specialist in emergency and critical care. She has worked in the veterinary field since 1993, spending all her time in ER and ICU. She earned her B.S. in Microbiology in 1994, earned her LVT in 1997, and completed an intensive year long internship at the Animal Medical Center of New York in 1998.
Her furry family includes 2 Pit Bulls named Rex and Pretty, Brownie a Wheaten Mix, and Boneapart a Chihuahua who thinks he is in charge of everyone.
Jennie (Taggart) Custer, Pharmacy Technician Supervisor
Jennie (Taggart) Custer
grew up in Ithaca, New York and Woodbridge, Virginia. She joined our practice in 2002. Though she manages our pharmacy and laboratory, she has a special interest in reproductive medicine.
Jennie has a son, Vinnie, and shares her home with Rocky (a 3-legged Min. Pinscher), Misty (a Shar-pei mix), Pogo (Chihuahua) and two cats - Thumper and Romeo. Outside of the office, she enjoys reading, gardening, and spending time with her husband, Frank, of 21 years.
Joanna Cocherell, Head Receptionist & Account Manager
grew up in Lakeridge, Virginia. She attended Northern Virginia Community College and joined the practice in 1996. Her background is in customer service and billing.
Joanna and her husband, Scott, have two girls, Taylor and Mackenzie. They also have two Labrador Retrievers and three cats. Outside of the office, she enjoys shopping, reading and driving the kids to their many activities.
Samantha Duvall, Evening Receptionist Supervisor
graduated with a bachelor's degree in psychology from University of Mary Washington in 2009 and joined the WAH Team. Her interest is in dog training; having trained her rescue pit bull in competitive obedience and as a certified therapy dog who worked with kids in Spotsylvania County Public Schools.
Samantha shares her home with 3 dogs (a pit bull mix named Jessie, a beagle named Penny and a pointer mix named Magick) 5 cats (Electra, Autumn,Xander, Stella, and Gigidy), and 3 ferrets (Oz, Marshall, and Lily).
Pat Brennan, Kennel Manager
grew up in Farmingdale, LI, NY. She graduated from Farmingdale Senior High with a business diploma. She owned and operated a landscape business for over 25 years.
Pat and her husband Kenny have 2 children. Outside of work, Pat is a seasoned marathoner and swimmer. She enjoys all outdoor sports and activities especially tennis with her husband and hiking with her dobe pup, Breyers.
